6 Alarming symptoms of tonsilloliths that should never be ignored

Have you ever had a sore throat but do you think there could be more than having strep throat or angina? Perhaps you have noticed that your tonsils are swollen or that you see something strange at the back of your throat. Pair these symptoms with the sensation of something stuck in your throat and chances are you can have tonsil stones. So, what are they, exactly?

“Formally known as tonsilloliths, the stones consist of mucus, dead cells and other debris that collect in the deep pockets of the tonsils and gradually condense into small, light-colored globs,” The New York Times explains. What causes the appearance of these pieces of calcified material is generally unknown, but health professionals believe that bacteria in the mouth may have something to do with their training.

The good news is that, most of the time, tonsil stones do not require any treatment. Often, they produce no symptoms, and some are small enough to be removed with a finger or the tip of the tongue. The larger stones can still receive antibiotics or surgery, so it is important to consult your doctor if you think you have them.

Here are six possible symptoms to watch for tonsil stones:

1. Bad breath

Tonsil stones are known to attract bacteria and give off a putrid odor, causing bad breath or bad breath.

2. Sore throat

Tonsil stones can make it painful to swallow. They can also cause coughing and in some cases even suffocating.

3. Swollen tonsils
Larger tonsillitis is often associated with infection of the tonsils, causing inflammation.

4. Difficulty swallowing
Swelling and large stones can make ingestion difficult depending on where they are.

5. Ear Ache

Because the tonsils share nerve pathways with the ears, a tonsil stone near the nerve could cause ear pain.

6. White debris
